Icelandic Lava Trek

Event Date: 05 Jul 2015

My personal message

I never thought that, 3½ years after my second spinal fusion and approaching a rather big birthday (next year), I would consider taking on a challenge. On July 5th I will be heading off for a 5 day trek over the volcanic lava fields of the Southern Highlands of Iceland!

We will be crossing one of the most actively volcanic regions of Iceland, passing multi-coloured rhyolite mountains, lava fields and steaming vents. We will cross snowfields, walk alongside huge glaciers and raging rivers as well as wading across some of those rivers en route. At night we will set up camp ourselves and try and sleep through the light-filled Icelandic summer nights.

The reason for taking on this challenge is simple. Chai Cancer Care receives no statutory funding and I see at very close hand how many people are affected by a cancer diagnosis. Chai is currently supporting over 2,150 cancer patients and their families but this number is constantly rising. By doing this challenge I am helping Chai to continue responding to the very real needs of the community.
